If you have a story to tell then send it to my email, and a photo or two would be nice.
This chapter is written by a regular Derann customer and one that I always had the pleasure to deal with.
Ian Bacon
It was about 1978 when my local Cinema closed that I decided to have my own sound projector, and start collecting films. I visited my local camera shop, found that there was a small display with super 8 sound projectors for sale and decided to purchase a Elmo ST 600. I also purchased a Walton Tom and Jerry cartoon to start me off. After a few more visits I found that the films stocked at the shop was very limited. I asked if they was going to stock more titles only to be told that photography was there main concern. I was told by another customer in the shop who over heard me, to buy a copy of Making Movies where I would find many advertisers who dealt with Super 8. After getting a copy I found out just how many dealers there was DCR , Powell Films, Collectors Club, plus more and of course Derann. This was about the time Derann was releasing the Warner and UA extracts. The first film I purchased from them was ‘Goodbye Piccadilly’ the Look at Life short , which I still have. That’s when the collecting bug really started . At first I could only afford shorts and digests, but as I got more spare money Features started being purchased. When Derann introduced monthly payments for films, that’s when I went mad. I would order my next film as the last payment was made for the previous film. This carried on until the sad day when Derann closed its doors for the last time. I have still got every film I purchased over the years. Ged would always go out of his way to help, I only wish we could go back to those days.
Hope this is not to long Ged and it is ok. Ian
