In the early days of Derann, there had always been a market for an ‘X’ rated movie [for overseas readers let me add that an X certificate in the UK was an indication that the film was suitable for viewing by people over 16 years of age. The British censor was very harsh and would give this rating to many films including – ‘King Kong Vs Godzilla’ and ‘The Raven’ (both 60s titles), so you must understand that a scene where a man and woman lie naked (perhaps covered in a sheet even) or a woman undressing could cause the censor to hang an ‘X’ cert on the title. A film with even a suggestion of adultery or perhaps some bad language would receive the same treatment. A cinema manager could be fined, loose his job or find himself in jail by disregarding these rules and letting in someone under that age…it was the law!] So our adult entertainment was product with titles like, ‘His Wife’s Habit’, ‘The Erotic Adventures of Zorro’, ‘The Love Pill’ and ‘Is There Sex after Death?’ Just titilation at best and certainly these films didn’t warrant a lable for each underperforming piece of sexploitation! Many years later we did try out full colour labels for a couple of titles…. but they failed to increase the sales and further attempts were abandoned.
We’ll be meeting those later.
