The History of Mr. Polly

by

Released in 1949 (which makes it just one year younger than myself), this is a light hearted affair with John Mills as the quiet and ‘lost’ Alfred Polly, as he tries to find his place in the busy and harsh world. One of the titles from our first contract with Rank Film Distributors and based on a 1910 book by H.G.Wells. I was handed a 16mm print and projector and given the task of editing this from 95 minutes to around 70-75… well it had to fit on 4×400′ spools. If I’m correct, I believe that  my efforts were helped along by a voice over (possibly Mills), that gave some narration which really aided my endeavours. A slow seller as a feature, but never failed to please the customers who made a purchase. The label was like Alfred, plain and quiet, but effective.
