The Fog

by

A two and a half page article from the November 1980 issue: I first saw this film in a London cinema (just off Leicester Square), during its first or second week of release… and for some reason was under the impression it was going to be a movie based on the book by Britain’s number one writer of chiller fiction James Herbert.

Putting that to one side I was galvanized by this impressive chiller that built to an effective climax atop of a lighthouse. Just how Derek came to get the rights to release a full feature is still a mystery to me and one that to which we will never know the answer. However we were on a winning streak with a number of full features from Rank Film Distributors around this time and I wasn’t really surprised by the arrival of the magnetic sound master that heralded the imminent appearance of super 8 prints! We would release a 3×600′ feature and a 600′ abridged version both in  scope.

The 1x600ft was released quite a while after the full feature, though it was advertised at the same time. As I wanted the cut down only I asked Derek at a collectors event why it was late. He said they hadn’t got a print supplied to edit yet. I bought it as soon as it was available. Later I did buy and odd reel 2 of it and found it edited into the cutdown with no duplication of shots.
