Clinton Hunt

I live in Waharoa, a small town in the Waikato region, North Island, New Zealand population around 5 million.

I started collecting films around 20 years ago, I’m sure New Zealand had film projectors but our family didn’t and I don’t think I know of any. My first film was Planet Of The Apes super 8mm b&w silent 200ft that I won on eBay from the USA then I started searching for film projectors here in NZ and was surprised how many were available on our auction site. Like most hobbies it bloomed from there and within a year or so I have a great collection, sci-fi,action, animated and music/musicals. My hunt for George Formby super 8 lead me to buying Derann titles, I have 3 or 4 different ones, I don’t own any Derann full features but I know from auction sites and your Facebook group that they are top quality and sort after. I’ve been lucky to have so many titles on Standard 8mm / Super 8mm / 9.5mm / 16mm considering how NZ is a long way from other countries except Australia, many were bought off eBay from the UK and USA when postage was reasonable. I wish NZ had conventions as I’d definitely go to them. Condensed or edited features are a great way to own films and I’m happy with them it’s the joy of projecting films that I like, whether they’re faded or in a bit of a poor condition as it adds to the joy in my opinion. Here in NZ there are a good number of collectors and you get to know each other by buying or selling them in NZ, a niche but a great one. The more you collect and read Facebook groups about film the more you learn and discover what was released etc.
