In 1958 a British institution was born with the release of the first in a long series of comedy films. ‘Carry On Jack’ was the eighth in the series. Most of the usual ‘Carry On’ team are missing, with only Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey and Jim Dale in the cast. Bernard Cribbins makes the first of only three appearances, while for Juliet Mills, Donald Houston and Cecil Parker, it was their only entry in the series. The cast alone should be enough to tell you that it didn’t begin life as a ‘Carry On’ film and was originally to be released as ‘Up the Armada’. It was the second of the series to be filmed in colour and the first Carry On film with a historical setting and period costumes. No Super 8 release.
