The Fall of the House of Usher

by

This film, which is somewhat of an oddity and and is now getting regular showings on ‘Talking Pictures’ in the UK. It was made by the low-budget company, GIB Films, produced by Ivan Barnett, who also worked as director and cinematographer. The film was made in 1948, but it wasn’t released until 1950. It was issued an ‘H’ Certificate, by the BBFC. Despite its limited budget the film proved surprisingly successful on its release as a second feature and even topped the bill in some cinemas. It was subsequently reissued in 1955 and 1961. During it’s life it has been released in numerous lengths, running from 73 to as little as just 39 minutes. We released it with its ‘H’ certificate intact, according to the entry in the Derann 1974 hire catalogue.

Gwen Watford made her first appearance in the production. As to where we picked up the rights, I sorry to report that I’m unable to shed any light on the subject. Another label quickly put together by Derek and looking at what I have, there is obviously an overlay missing. It was only ever released on standard 8.

Label courtesy of Peter Brooke at ‘SPROCKETS’ .
