Harry Nadler & Delta #1

by

Many of the UK members will fondly recall the name of Harry Nadler, a quiet but energetic and affable gent who was more than a little consumed by his love of fantasy films. He was a film enthusiast through & through, who brought and sold 16mm, a hobby that would turn into a small business. He ran The Delta Film Library from Broughton Road in Salford as well as using the prestigious address of the Savoy Cinema, Sale in Cheshire. He was well known for his attendances at the many shows and conventions, including Blackpool, and as Harry and myself had an interest in fantasy films, especially Godzilla movies, we would always find time to talk.

However, there was another side to Harry, for he had been a member of the Delta Film Group, a small band of amateur film makers based in and around Greater Manchester from the mid 1950s.

In 1963 The Delta Group consisting of Harry Nadler, Charles Partington and Tony Edwards decided to start a publication that would compliment their interest in Science Fiction movies and in May of that year published a fan magazine called “Alien” which featured short fiction and film related articles by the group. This ran for 15 issues, changing its name to “Alien Worlds” at some point and ceased publication in 1969.

Issue 2 contained a three page article, a light hearted piece written by Harry in which he told ‘The Delta Story’. Its companion piece entitled ‘Son of the Delta Story’ appeared in issue 3, and was co-written by another Delta cohort, Tony Edwards.

Following the cancellation of ‘Alien Worlds’, they started another magazine based on the Science-Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Cinema genre, entitled “L’Incroyable Cinema”, which ran from 1969 to 1971. However after this the Group drifted apart to focus on their families and work, etc.

My thanks to late Tony Edwards for the original material, along with a so many details.
