CARRY ON SERGEANT: 1958

In September 1958 a new British institution was born with the release of the first of a new comedy film series. ‘Carry On Sergeant’ was the UKs third most successful film of that year and the series would continue into the 1990s. There was some talk of a revival just a few years ago. Beginning today we’ll look these classic British comedies as they appeared at ABC cinemas and at Rank cinemas when took over the UK theatrical releases, 31 in total. This film was apparently released full length by Derann, and although I have seen evidence of its release I don’t recall ever seeing a copy.

In the mid 1960’s here in the USA, some local TV stations were playing these “Carry On” films on late night broadcasts . These were fantastic comedies to come from the UK and I loved these series .

    1. Hi Monte, these comedies are shown frequently on TV over here in the UK…. however much of their original humour has now been edited out for sake of the ‘Woke’ movement!!

It was definitely released on 8mm by Derann when they had the Agfa B/W stock, my late friend Norman bought a copy, he told me it was a nice print, but a lot of these B/W films I believe were never re-printed once the genuine B/W stock was used up, so limited prints in circulation

    1. Hi Barry, good to hear from you!

  3. Hi, Ged

I hope you are well and I’m enjoying your site. I really enjoyed your interviews that on YouTube .

I had a very nice original print of Carry on Sergeant on 16mm from Derek Sutton back around 2005. When I was heavily into 16mm.

    Take care
    And best regards . Mark
