Rollerball – Part 2

by

I was never a big fan of this movie, which I thought was all noise and no plot. Didn’t stop it selling. Label was designed by our regular artist Marianne Frost.

Ged, I’ve always wondered why, given the trust UA had in Derann for the super 8 releases and the quality being produced, that they choose not to use Derann for video distribution for titles like this in the UK?

Was video distribution just such a very different beast? I know big distributers like CIC took direct control of Paramount video releases, but I always thought it a shame that Derann didn’t seem to have video rights on titles like the UA films, especially given the work and determination that had clearly gone into providing such high quality releases for the super 8 buyer.

I’d love to hear more on your insight into the video release market at that time.

    1. Hi Rob, they made big money with video and just ‘tea money’ with 8mm… they just couldn’t waste their time with 8mm.

Actually Ged, the situation might have been very different if the UA 8mm deal had been made some time before the video boom and used Deranns business acumen to break into the matket. I don’t think all the majors at the time had realised the money to be made until Intervision stepped in and changed the market completely. I remember the big publicity in Screen International trade paper regarding the big coup of UA titles West Side Story, A Bridge too Far, Rocky. Carrie etc. Rental Only and they happened to be in the right place at the right time..
And then sell-through and piracy flooded the market. The rest is history
